God bless you for wanting to help a local family at this time of year! I wish that I were in a position to do that as well.
I would guess that when you mention children, you are probably thinking in terms of kids still in school, or younger. I know a recently separated (maybe
divorced) mother in Rockport with three kids, ages (guessing here) 19, 20, and 21, with two (possibly all three) of the children going to North Shore Community
College.
The mother had cut down on her hours working to take care of her mother, who passed away a couple of months ago. The 19-year old son does work, and between the
mother and the son, the family has been barely able to stay afloat. In a recent conversation, the mother confided to me that it is a month-by-month struggle
to even be able to pay the mortgage, and she could not do it were it not for help from her youngest. I know their Christmas will be very sparse this year.
I am also pretty sure that the mother would be morbidly embarrassed at the idea of somebody telling others that they are in need, so would ask that my name not
be mentioned. If this is a family that you would like to help, I will be happy to send you the mother's name and address. The children have all graduated
from Rockport High School, and I suspect you could contact the principal of RHS to verify their need. In fact, if not this family, perhaps contacting the
principal of a Rockport or Gloucester school might be a good way of helping a family that seems to "fall between the cracks" out.
They are truly wonderful people who never ask for anything.
